Suson Eye Specialists is a family owned medical and surgical eye care practice which combines a caring, compassionate approach with modern technology and professionalism.

Our practice was founded in 1972 by Dr. Elieser Suson who left the full-time staff at the Medical College of Wisconsin to enter private practice.  We quickly became one of the premiere Cataract and Implant surgery practices in the region leading the way in advanced techniques.

Known as much for our caring and professional approach, we have also continued to lead the way with innovative trends in surgical and medical eye care.  Dr. John Suson, Dr. Judy Suson-Hoggatt, and Dr. Robert Mertz continue this tradition of excellence with compassion and professionalism.

Suson Eye Specialists has two offices conveniently located at Mayfair Mall in Wauwatosa and at the Riverwoods Outpatient Center in Glendale.  Our services include general or medical eye exams, full-service optical (glasses or contact lenses), cataract surgery, glaucoma surgery, and LASIK vision correction.

Meet our Staff

John D. Suson, M.D.

Dr. John Suson, MD attended Marquette University and graduated summa cum laude with an honors degree in Chemistry in 1988.  He attended the Medical College of Wisconsin where he was in the top of his class and graduated with a medical degree with honors in research in 1992.  Dr. Suson served a one year internship in general medicine at St. Luke's Medical Center (1992-1993) in Milwaukee and completed specialty training in ophthalmology (1993-1996) at the Eye Institute in Milwaukee, where he served as chief resident.  Dr. Suson currently holds a clinical instructor appointment at the Medical College of Wisconsin where he actively participates in the surgical instruction of resident eye surgeons.  He has maintained a commitment to continued development of surgical skill and knowledge which he brings to his patients and the practice. He was among the first surgeons in the state performing LASIK procedures and has extensive skill and knowledge in advanced cataract surgery and lens implant technology.  Dr. Suson has been board certified in ophthalmology by the American Board of Ophthalmology since 1998 with recertification in 2008.  Dr. Suson is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, the American Medical Association, the State Medical Society of Wisconsin, and the Milwaukee Ophthalmologic Society.  He is currently the referral surgeon of choice in the Milwaukee area for the Newsight Network of Optometrists for Laser Refractive Surgery and is  Medical Director of the Wisconsin Eye Laser Center of Milwaukee.

Judy P. Suson Hoggatt, M.D.

Dr. Judy Suson-Hoggatt, MD is on the clinical teaching staff at the Medical College of Wisconsin and has taught surgery to resident ophthalmologists at the Eye Institute and Veterans Administration Medical Center in Milwaukee. She received her undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Wisconsin and completed a one year research fellowship in ocular pathology at the Medical University of South Carolina, where she also served her internship. Dr. Hoggatt completed her residency in ophthalmology at the Medical College of Wisconsin, and in 1995, joined her father, Dr. Eleiser B. Suson, in private practice. She has been board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology since 1997 and was recertified in 2009.  She is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the State Medical Society of Wisconsin, and the Milwaukee Ophthalmologic Society.  Her focus in ophthalmology is refractive surgery, cataracts, and the treatment of glaucoma and diabetic eye disease.

Dr. Robert Mertz, O.D. 

Dr. Mertz is a 1986 graduate from the Indiana School of Optometry, has twenty-three years of experience providing eye care to patients of all ages-pediatric through geriatric.  Having attained diagnostic and therapeutic certification, Dr. Mertz has expertise in the fields of complex contact lens fitting and the evaluation and treatment of dry eye syndrome and “pink eye”.  In his spare time, he enjoys fishing with his son, running, and watching college athletics.
